BRT Wildlife Sanctuary sits where the Eastern and Western Ghats meet - the only place in India where an indigenous community, the Soliga people, lives inside a working tiger reserve. This weekend takes you into both worlds: dawn birding with a naturalist, a jeep safari into the core zone, a meal with a Soliga family, and time with the forest rangers who patrol these hills every day. Three days. Two nights. One ecosystem unlike anywhere else.
The experience
What these days feel like
What is special here
The junction of two mountain systems creates a biodiversity hotspot spanning dry scrub, moist evergreen and high grassland on a single hillside - with one of the highest tiger densities in South India and over 250 bird species. The Soliga people, who have lived inside this tiger reserve for centuries, are now recognised as essential to its conservation.
On the ground
Drive out Friday evening; wake to birdsong Saturday. Morning with the naturalist and Soliga families, afternoon jeep safari in the core zone, cultural programme at dusk. Sunday: a temple walk, a meeting with forest rangers, reflections, and home well before afternoon.
