Mudumalai sits at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala part of the Nilgiri Biosphere, the largest contiguous wildlife habitat in peninsular India. Elephants here move in herds of sixty. Tigers follow routes older than any road. This weekend covers it all: jeep safari, a guided forest trek, dawn birding, and the Theppakadu Elephant Camp. Pickup from Bengaluru Friday; back Sunday evening.
The experience
What these days feel like
What is special here
Part of a 5,500 sq km connected corridor, shared with Nagarhole, Bandipur and Wayanad, where wildlife moves at a scale most Indian reserves can't match. The Theppakadu Elephant Camp, a century-old institution where elephants and mahouts carry out forest operations, offers a window into a relationship almost gone from the subcontinent.
On the ground
Drive Friday night through the Nilgiri foothills. Dawn birds Saturday, then a moderate forest trek with packed lunch, afternoon safari deep into the reserve. Sunday morning at Theppakadu, then a meeting with forest rangers, then home to Bengaluru by evening.
